Malta: IB Geography Tourism Project

Here are some of the negative effects of tourism on Malta:

The inward flow of tourists coming to Malta is controlled by external, foreign forces. Tourist may not always choose to come to Malta. In addition many tour/travel operators and organizers used by tourist are controlled by foreign powers, who may not have Malta's best interests at heart. Since Malta is heavily dependent on tourism, it is not ideal that it is being controlled and run by external forces.

Growth in the amount of tourists received each year has created and increased demand for new buildings to accommodate more tourist. This, coupled with the fact that Malta's already high tourist density is increasing, presents the possibility for increased pollution and lack of space and resources for locals to use.

Increased tourism has brought about polution caused through the construction of hotels, air polution caused by increased flying of planes, and noise pollution from cars, tour buses (traffic), and planes .

With tourism as a key source of employment many Maltese laborers face what is known as "seasonal unemployment". Malta's tourism season is usually at its peak during summers where most people come to enjoy the sun and beaches which provides jobs for many Maltese laborers. However, during the winter months Malta receives less tourists and requires a smaller work force in the tourism sector. This means that during the winter periods some Maltese laborers may experience unemployment.
